Automatic and Power-Assisted Doors
Thursday, December 1, 2022
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM Eastern Time Zone
Description
Entrances and doors are key components of access along routes and to buildings, rooms, and spaces. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Standards require automatic, and power assisted doors to comply with the standards when provided on accessible routes. The ADA and ABA Standards reference industry standards developed under protocols of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and published by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA). This session will cover the scoping and technical requirements in the ADA and ABA Standards for entrances and doors when they are automatic, or power assisted. Presenters will review in detail the specifications in the ANSI/BHMA referenced standards that address operating characteristics, including opening speed, safety features, sensors and activation devices, labeling, among others. This webinar will include video remote interpreting (VRI) and real-time captioning. Questions can be submitted in advance of the session or can be posed during the live webinar. Webinar attendees can earn continuing education credits.

Questions for presenters:
1 |
This question is specific to 2019 CBC language but hopefully we can obtain some clarification:
11B-404.2.9 exception item c describes requirements for push plates and vertical actuation bars used with powered doors. This language is associated with a specific exception allowing a series of doors to have 8.5lb operating force, when one of the doors in series is a powered door.
11B-404.3.5, which describes overall requirements for controls of automatic and power-assisted doors, only indicates that the controls are required to comply with section 309 requirements.
Are the push plate and vertical actuation bar requirements defined in the 11B-404.2.9 exception applicable to all automatic and power-assisted doors using manual controls? |
2 |
Does the path of travel through an airlock need to be a straight line? |
3 |
Are automate doors covered under the ADA or ABA? And are stores like Family Dollar and Circle K Gas Stations required to have them installed at their entrances of their stores? To make them more accessible for people using wheelchairs, walker, etc. |
