Access to Over-the-Road Buses

Wednesday, September 22, 1999

Both transportation providers and consumers will gain a greater understanding of the new federal accessibility requirements for Over-the-Road Buses during the September distance learning program presented by the Great Lakes DBTAC. In a long-awaited joint final rule, the U.S. Access Board and U.S. Department of Transportation issued regulations for Over-the-Road Buses last summer. The final rule includes scoping and technical provisions for lifts, ramps, wheelchair securement devices, and moveable aisle armrests. The specifications also describe the design features that an OTRB must have to be readily accessible to and usable by persons who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids. During this distance learning session, Marilyn Golden, Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF), will highlight the critical components and timelines under the regulation for both small and large OTRB companies.
