The Technology Landscape for Applicants and Employees who are Blind or Experiencing Vision Loss

Technology is integral to many aspects of life including employment. How do persons who are blind or experiencing vision loss search and apply for jobs or perform essential job functions? This session will examine the technologies used by persons who are blind and low vision, how those technologies allow the performance of essential job duties, common barriers encountered in the employment realm and the obligations employers have under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to applicants and employees with disabilities.

Questions for presenters:

1 How can ADA Coordinators enforce managers to invest in technologies to recruit applicants with low vision or blind?
2 I am a State government employee, temporarily blind in one eye due to a recent accident. I am a candidate for a cornea transplant. What accommodations can I expect my employer to provide me in the interim?
3 One common problem is employers purchasing technology that claims to be ADA- or 508-compliant, but turns out not to be. What are your suggestions for ensuring that IT is truly accessible prior to purchase?
4 When an employer has a staff meeting and shows information on a projected screen, what is the recommended size of projected font for staff to be able to see from twenty-five (25) to thirty (30) feet from the screen?
5 What resources are there for employees suffering with gradual vision loss for glaucoma?
6 What are best practices and tips for hosting a virtual (at home) program for people who are blind or have low vision? Is video ok to use? Audio clips? Art-making projects?
