Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace

Tuesday, May 16, 2023
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM Eastern Time Zone

Description

Many employers invest in basic first aid training for their staff as a form of emergency preparedness. But what happens when the health and safety crisis is emotional or internal? Mental illness and substance use disorders often go unrecognized and unaddressed in the workplace when employers and staff don't recognize the signs or understand how to provide the basics of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). This session aims to teach attendees what MHFA is and how it prepares you to manage mental health challenges including early signs and symptoms all the way to crises like panic attack, overdose and someone’s thoughts of suicide. The workshop will provide an overview of the training, introduce the ALGEE action plan, and highlight how this training can benefit both individual staff and organizations. This workshop is NOT a replacement for MHFA certification.

To ensure your question is answered during the session, individuals are highly encouraged to submit their questions ahead of time via the registration website (the option to submit questions is available once you have registered for the session).

Human Generated Real-Time Captioning and American Sign Language will be provided for this session.

Questions for presenters:

1 What is the best way for manager's to talk to their employees about mental health issues. How do you start that conversation?
2 Inequity has led to a great deal of mistrust in certain communities relating to interventions in this area, along with the enormous stigma around mental health issues. People may not feel safe disclosing challenges or their solutions, and they may have good cause to do so. Organizational units tasked with responsibility for these challenges may be positioned in risk management or in other lines of command, creating additional challenges to accessing services or resources. People lose their jobs for disclosing, and for not disclosing. What are best practices at the institutional or organizational level to help de-stigmatize mental health issues and foster a culture of acceptance?
